Heels over Head is a smoldering all-female soul-jazz band from Durban. This SAMA nominated funky foursome were the winners of the 2010 Yamaha Young Talent Award,whose debut album “Could It Be” is racking up popular and critical acclaim. Renowned for their suave, sophisticated and sparkling stage presence, the band has found its groove and created a smooth, watertight brand of slinky soul-kissed contemporary jazz. Stylistic influences include Maskandi, Mbaqange, Gospel, Classical, Funk, House and Reggae, all of which are wrapped within their signature sound of easy breezy jazz-pop with a slight Afro feel.
Band members Thulile Zama and Nomkhosi Mazibuko on vocals, Lindelwe Ngonelo on keyboards and piano and Rebekah Pillay on drums and vocals, each has significant experience in the music industry nationally and abroad. They have, individually and collectively, shared stages with great musicians including the likes of Abdullah Ibrahim, Sbongile Khumalo, Busi Mhlongo, Hugh Masekela R.J. Benjamin and dub poet Linton Kwezi Johnson. For some performances Heels over Head adds the ladies Chillie Stent on guitar and/or Maria Cohen on cello.
Songs like "All the Things You Are", "Could It Be" and many others get the crowd off their seats. Other favorites that keep the audience humming are "Love Song", "Inyandza Leyo" and "Past, Present, Future". Their vibrant stage presence and flawless technical performance has earned them a number of fans and followers. This energy and passion is what keeps their audience tapping their feet...and not a show goes by that the "vuma-ring doesn't take over.
